Chances of tyre upgrade?

Post by Foxy »

Hi, the handbook recommends 175 x 65 x r 14 tyres on my 1.9 td N reg.1996, ZX. Does anybody know of any reason why I cannot put alloys on my model Avantage from an earlier 1.9 t.d. m reg. zx Volcane??????????? Apart from the wheel size being different @ 185 x 60 x r14? I do know that the earlier model zx's had uprated suspension. Therefore what would fit the tyre size 175 x 65 x r14 wheel on a zx avantage off another model or make?
All replies gratefully received!
Thanx,
Foxy :?

Volcane wheels with 185/60s should look smart and fit straight on using the volcane wheel bolts, should be fairly plentiful at the scrappers too.

I was wondering if the 15 inch wheels from the 2.0 16v would fit a standard ZX? Or maybe some steelys from a xantia with wider tyres, or will I run into clearance problems with the rear arches?

Hi Foxy. I bought some Volcane ally's for my ZX. They are 175x65x14 and fit with no problems at all.. My original wheels were 13 inch with 165x70 tyres on them. I tried a 185 but they wont go in the spare frame under the car.. :(

The main difference is in handling, the car corners slightly better as the tyre has less sidewall height. :)

The Volcane ally's look nice as well :-) ..

On the question of spare wheels - our ZX 1.9D has 175/65x14 wheel/tyres - but the spare (original) is 165x14 which probably has much the same rolling radius but fits the spare wheel cage.

I can't quite see the point for this small amout of variation as there would seem plenty of room underneath for a deeper cage.

The BX with standard alloys had a steel spare with thich walled steel tube welded on the boltholes so that the alloy wheel bolts could be used.

I've got alloys with 185/60 x 14 and the spare is 175/65 x 13, which has the same rolling circle. No probs.

I wonder why sometimes people don't use the search feature, which has huge listing about tyres and rims. :?

Sooty, its because if you have all 5 wheels the same you dont have to change wheels twice when you get a problem.. i.e. put the spare on.. then get the other wheel fixed as soon as possible so you can put it back on again.. If they are all the same size, one change is all you need. :)

Hi Sooty. I can get my spare 175x65x14 in the spare cage as long as I dont tighten it up too much. What I don't have though, is a spare Volcane type ally wheel. So my car doesn't look nice with the iron spare wheel on. :(

Anyone got a 14 inch Volcane ally wheel in good condition for sale? :D

My wheels can be seen on the www.ZXclub.co.uk website that Vanny put up. :D
