Cambelt change costs and change intervals - ZX 1.8i

Post by janneman63 »

How often do you have to change the cambelt on a ZX 1.8i? I have heard different opinions about that...
And how much does it cost approx.?
Volvo 66-77
Renault 14-79
Simca Horizon-79
Citroen Visa-82
Citroen BX 16-86
Citroen BX 19-88, the best one I yet! Sorry to see it go

Hej Janne -

I believe that 50Kmiles (80.000km or 8000mil) is the most "correct" interval.
You may see figures like 62Kmiles (10.000mil) - even 75Kmiles (12.000mil) quoted around. If you have a Haynes they will most often quote a conservative figure of 38Kmiles (6000mil) to be on the safe side.

Note that every 3.rd belt change you also replace idler/tensioner rollers and waterpump regardless - as these components then have reached terminal life expectancy.

If you want to be really safe on your engine - then have the cambelt tension checked initially after replacement (500miles) and at halflife interval (25Kmiles). I once had a loose cambelt on my CX

Cost would be approx 2 workshop hours.
