HELP.... DOOR LOCK PROBLEM

Post by shaunthesheep »

went to open my passenger side door tonight with the key & not remote (due to headlinning been removed), inserted key, unlocked door, pulled on handle to open door, BUT DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN.
very strange i thought, so i got into car though the drivers door, no problem,
leaned over to open passenger side door from inside, OPEN'S WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM,
i'm at a loss as to what the problem could be.

What car is it? Does it have deadlocks? Once you have opened the door from the inside, will the handle from the outside then work? Will the door open from the outside if you lock and unlock the door?

I get exactly the same problem with the drivers door
The work around at the moment is to give the outside handle a good quick yank, with the same style as if you were slapping someone.
The problem has been there for the last 6 months or so. I have tried taking off the inner door lining, but the heads are buggered, so it's a more in-depth job.
I sympathise, but at least yours is 'only' the passenger side
OH, and I also get a very similar problem with the boot mechanism.

Don't talk to me about boot locks! Mine only opens when it feels like it (this is a centrally locked ZX by the way). Sometimes there is no problem, other times, no amount of re-locking and unlocking will open the thing. Today is one of those days. When I can be bothered, I will be dismantling the lock to see if I can see what's going on.

Alison,
sounds like that "actuator", a little solenoid that actually pushes the lock/rod over. A common ZX problem.

sorted, after removing the inner door trim, fould out that the lock had been repaired before by the previous ownner.
the problem was with the link rod that links the outside handle to the lock, the plastic support where the rod goes into had snapped off or should i say the metal washer had came unglued!,
cable tied it together for the moment, will have to get a new handle, speaking of a new handle, calling mr jon wood, do you know if andyspares do stock such a item??, or is it a trip to a scrappy to get hold of one or am i going to be looking at main dealer?
one big headache done, couple still to do...

Just a note on the deadlocks, they can be operated with the key in the normal way, just lock the door as usual but hold the key in the locked position for a few seconds, if all is working ok you will hear the deadlocks engage

Dom,
Hello mate! You mentioned that your headlining has been removed. Was it easy to do? Another thing, how is it secured to the body? Whilst i was trying to sort my sunroof, i got the corners free (enough to get to the sunroof drains) but i could not tell how the rest was fixed, it seemed really tight and i did not want to damage anything. Just curious really!! If i have to remove the whole lot i may leave it to my friendly helpful Citroen dealer!

rich,
heres a list of what i removed:-
grab rails (refitted after linning was out)
map lights
intiour light (refitted after linning was out)
plastic trim going up the sides of the windowscreen
sun visor's (refitted after linning was out)
central locking reciving panel in roof
rear plastic trim behind rear seats (thats the plastic which the seat belts come through
you will need torx screwdrivers sizes from T8 - T25
it takes about 3 hours to do.
the head lining itself is held on by velcro!!, five bits attach onto the sunroof frame, three bits of double sided tape at the rear of the lining, where it meets the boot
have fun

On the subject of AZ boot locks again, Jon, do you think it's most likely the solenoid? When one (and later the other) of the door solenoids went on my AX, what happened was that you would lock the door but it would be stiff and often would instantly unlock again.
Actually, when I got the car, you would lock it, it would then unlock and then you would lock it a second time and it would stay locked. It hasn't been doing that for a while. That does sound a bit similar.
I don't mind replacing it, but I had thought it was the lock mechanism itself as my chum Jo, who has an M reg ZX TD tells me that the spring is a bit pants and she had to strip and rebuild her lock with a replacement spring. Perhaps I have been letting this influence me. How easy is it to access, strip and replace the lock mechanism?
I am about to get my CD changer refitted, and it would be a shame if I couldn't get the boot open to change me CDs!!

Easy to look at boot lock. Inside the tailgate there is a big plastic cover in the middle secured by 2 plastic screws that you turn 180 degrees with a coin/screwdriver. The inner workings of the tailgate are now revealed. It could be that the boot lock is just "sticky", this is likely cos no-one ever puts the key in there; using the plip instead. As you have the tailgate open, peering inside, maybe get someone to lock/unlock using the plip and see whats happening in the lock area, ie is the actuator pushing the rod over to lock it, is it seized etc etc etc.

Plip?!!! Eeeeeee luxury, I dream of having a plip. It's a key for me. Actually, you are quite right, I never use the key, mainly paranoia about ever being able to open the boot again.

Too late, I have been thoroughly outed as one of the female persuasion. In my defence, I am one of the work on my own car and not of the do makeup in the rear view mirror kind.
I am not actually much bothered, but if you see me on Honest John's formum, keep it quiet because it REEKS of testosterone in there and a little anonymity goes a long way.
