ABS Dashboard light on a Xantia

Hi

My car is due for an MOT, but the ABS does not work, and at the moment what with Xmas and all, i can't really afford to get them fixed

Is there a simple way to disconnect the dashboard ABS warning lamp?,
Pulling a fuse maybe?
or is it pull the bulb out time?

It is one of these annoying MOT rules if the car has it, it has to work.
This is only the second car i have had with ABS so i have never relied on it that much anyway. As far as i am concerned this is not a safety issue, it is at the moment a financial issue for me

Putting out the bulb won't get the car through the MOT. The tester will expect to see it lit, then go out.

I have managed 40 of my 50 years of driving without ABS so I sympathise, unfortunatly, the new MOT test requires that your ABS light indicates that the system is working correctly. I dont know if completely removing it from the car would satisfy them, but I have had this problem since my first CX with ABS!

The problem is likely to be due to bad connections on the ABS sensor connectors, which shouldn't be to difficult to find. There is a string on here somwhere that tells you which sensors are connected to which pins of the computer plug, I am sure someone will come up with it for you.

Well it is worth the risk, wether he looks to see if the light is there or not.
Over here in Germany, in my experience they don't tend to look in every nook and kranny for a fault, (last time they did not check to see if the main beam lights or the horn worked) so i might risk it, if it fails i have a month to get it sorted.

I will bring mine to Germany to have it MOTd next time! This country seems to be about the only one that takes any notice of edicts from Brussels! If indeed that was where it came from.

Also we only have to get it MOT'ed every 2 years

Problems with the ABS light are invariably down to a faulty wheel sensor. Why not check them and have a working ABS system and have the job right? Try the search button as there have been many posts on this topic.
Check each cable to the sensor.....the fault usually is with the front nearside wheel sensor, and yes they are a bugger to remove without damaging them.

I already know what sensors are at fault, the car has been pluged into Citroens Computer (front drivers side and rear passenger side), i just can't afford to get them fixed at this moment in time, so to just to get it trough the MOT i wanted to turn the warning lamp out some how, and get them fixed in a month or two.

I am surprised to hear that.

I thought Germany would carry out the test every year like we do, once the car is three years old.

Nope, over here, from new, a car has to be MOT'ed every two years.

Quite nice really that i have to go through the stress & worry only every 2 years.

Its more likely to be the connections than the sensors, its just a question of finding them. I am sure somebody on here will be able to tell you.

Ok as my car is a left hand drive, it is the opposite side to a UK car

Drivers side front
Passengers side rear

I know where the connection block is for the front sensor, roughly in the middle under the engine, mixed in with all the old grease and crud, as for the rear connection blocks, i don't know where they are, i never got that far in removing the rear sensors from the car in the breakers yard, i could not get them out.

Here in New Zealand, new cars must be tested every year and as soon as the car reaches 3 years old it must be tested every 6 months!

HI all and nomad, I have plenty of experience on petrol cars and electrics but little on the diesel engine ( just got my very first one today and love it but im sure I will require some assistance sooner or later) that's the hello bit over lol now to your problem on the ABS and how to test the sensors,

switch ignition off and remove the key for safety reasons

now locate the ABS ECU and unplug the multi-plug,

the multi-plug is a 37 pin and is numbered, pins 15 & 30 is front left sensor pins 1 & 6 is front right sensor 19 & 28 rear left and 29 & 31 rear right,

now you need a multi meter to test the ohms/resistance on each sensor and all should read 1080 ohms approx low or zero resistance is the bad sensor,

I hope this helps
ps pulling fuses wont turn the ABS warning light off the problem has to be sorted and it will then go off on its own
