Peugeot 405 oil coming up dipstick tube.

Post by Mick Edwards »

I've got an 1800cc petrol 405 (1996) and noticed that oil was accumulating/spraying/being blown over the ignition coil etc. on the right hand side of the engine. Initially I suspected the valve cover gasket, however I've now isolated the source to the dipstick tube (by tying a rag over the dipstick and tube end). My next step is to drop the sump and examine the pump etc. Anyone got any better ideas or know what the problem is? In all other respects the car is fine (runs well, doesn't overheat etc.)

Most likely the fume hoses clogged somewhere - a common problem.
It's the rubber hoses venting the sump and oil filler to the air intake.

Hoses clogg by mayonnaise sludge which comes from condensed oil fumes mixed with water. If hoses are really bad they can be swollen/detoriated inside and create a blockage. Even a sharp bend can do this.

The water in turn comes from combustion and condensing - not indicating serious problems. It's completely normal.

The mayonnaise builds up if you're doing short trips everyday and the engine just barely reaches normal driving temp. However it could be indicative of a defective coolant thermostat that is seized partly open. This prolongs the warming up cycle of the engine considerably.

Hi

Check the breather pipes are all clear, Then go down to your local Peugeot dealer & get a new dipstick, Its the seal that goes on the end that causes this problem.

You will also notice the new part is modified too.

Thanks, hadn't thought of that, I'll get de-gunking and let you know if it cures the problem.

I should have said, Go to your Pug dealer & order a new dipstick.

The new Peugeot parts policy is to only keep fast moving service items in stock, If you want anything else it has to be ordered in.
