XANTIA 1.9TD RATTLE

Post by johnway »

Hello,
Advise needed please. My 97 VSX Xantia is rattling more than ever - new water pump, air con bearing and belt fitted but engine clattering more than usual (positively deafening compared to my C5 HDI). All comments/suggestions welcome!!
Regards,
John.

I Blame it all on my Dad!! (Sadly had to give up driving & his 2nd BX) but Mum still has a C1.

The rattling is from the offside engine when at low revs/startup - the faster the engine speed the less rattle. I know diesels clank at the best of times but this really sounds like a bucket of bolts.

John.

Check for a loose crankshaft pulley as a matter of urgency. If it is loose, and is left for very long it will knacker the crankshaft woodruff key slot.
This is not a signature.

If its diesel knock through over advanced timing, it will get quieter as it warms up, if its a mechanical knock, I would check the crankshaft pulley for tightness, the key can wear and allow it to move even if the bolt is tight. If you can get to it, you should be able to feel it move if thats the problem, unless of course you have allready checked that and I've missed something.

Would a '97 1.9TD still have the non-ECU coldstart timing modifier (vacuum operated type) ?
If so then its definately a possible problem. Wellknown problem on earlier diesel variants.

The 97 will have the electrovalves controlled by the ECU.

Thanks for all the advice, guys! On further examination I have determined that the majority of the rattling is at the top of the engine. Pulley OK, could the diesel pump be the culprit or ?

John.

The fuel pump on my '94 TD sounded like it was on its last legs, but changing the rather dirty fuel filter quietened it down again. You could try the same on yours.
