Noisy 2.0 HDi Xsara estate

Post by simonelsey »

Hi all . My xsara has just started to make a tinkling noise . Seems to be coming from passenger side of engine . At tick over not noisy , but as revs increase it to say 2500 it get noisy . then at 3000 it seems to stop . Any ideas Would be of benefit . My first guess would be problem with camshaft as seems to be that type of noise . But engine has only done 88,000 miles so I dont think its that . No other problems wiht engine pulls ok ,

Any help would be great .

sounds like the typical crank shaft pulley.

306 HDi one cost £130 + VAT + Labour from the dealer.

you could probbably do it on drive way but its getting the crank pulley bolt undone ,its loctited on you will need an air gun or a rather long bar

Can any one tell me the diameter of the crank pulley .This would be handy for me to know right now, for diagnostic purposes . As I ve found a piec of metal 7mm wide and 360mm long in the engine bay on top of the alternator and Im just wondering if this is foreign or is part of the crank pulley.

Many Regards

If this noise instatly dissapears at 3000-3100 rpm, then it's more likely to be worn injectors causing too much pre-injection, and hence the engine is pre-igniting (pinking)

The pre-injection system is turned off at 3000-3100rpm, so above that engine speed, it no longer makes the noise.

I have exactly the same problem on a 306 HDI 90 at the moment, and am looking into finding somewhere that can re-condition the injectors, as new ones are f&*%£#ing expensive!
