405 Wishbone

Post by mbunting »

Bush has gone - been told replacing the wishbone is the best way to go.

GSF used to stock them, but they've gone from the site.

Local garrage says that my car was a "changeover year" ( 1995 reg GTX Est 2.0 Auto ), and there are two different wishbones.

I know these spent some time at Swinderby airfield, so if it helps, it DOESNT have ABS ( which parkers says it does for the aparent year ).

Any advice on what to look for to work out which one it is ? May be a trip to the breakers over the weekend.

Cheers
Mat.

Hi

Theres a choice of 2 different wishbones per side for yours.

VIN number ending in 71358279 is the change over point, VIN number ending in 71358280 is the first of the 405s with the newer type wishbone, I take it you have the later type on your 405?

The right hand side wishbones are Pug part number 3521 77 for the firm suspension version & 3521 76 for the normal suspension version.

The left hand ones are Pug part number 3520 A6 for the firm suspension version & 3520 A7 for the normal suspension version.

You should have the normal suspension on yours but I cant be 100% certain on that, Peugeot could have fitted either depending on what mood they where in that day, Take your VIN number & check with a Pug dealer.

Also ABS doesn't make a difference with the wishbone choice, You will also notice the new wishbone doesn't have a ball joint riveted on it like other cars, Dont worry, The 405 ball joint is part of the hub.

Thanks Lee,

It's the later type I have, the soft suspension type ( explains why my srdt felt firmer around corners).

Now I just need to find one !

Question.. Do these VIN number change-over's correspond with the change new shape ( dash / boot ), or is it not that simple ( ie. can I just go to a new shape model, or do I need to check the vin ? )

Regards
Mat.

Hi, Nope you need to check the VIN numbers, The changeover was I think sometime in the middle of the 1994 model year.

The Mi16 / Le - Mans & T16 have different wishbones so dont bother with one of those in the scarpyard ( If you find one in there )

You can get new bushes for the wishbones but you need to press them in.

Thanks, I've found one, it's off-the-car, so I'm collecting tomorrow.

Out of interest, is it just the wishbone that's different between the sports and soft suspension, or are we talking different springs / shocks as well - presumably the wishbones will have some kind of different fixings for these ?

I ask because I was slightly disapointed in the difference of the suspension - this 95 reg GTX is softer around the corners than the 94SRDT I had some time ago ( that was quite a cart by comparison ! )

Not that I'm interested in thrashing the bends

Hi

The springs & shocks will be different too between the normal, firm & sports suspension.

The front springs & front & rear shocks are NOT handed between sides though, Unlike the 306 & newer Pugs.

I too noticed the my 95 N reg 405 Executive was pretty poor around the corners after having a 94 L reg 405 GTX.

A 405 is made for bends, The facelifted ones are even better after Peugeot sorted the series one 405s tendency to suffer snap oversteer for an inexperienced driver if they got a corner wrong & send the car into a spin. Getting the 405s rear wheel clear off the floor & embarrassing Mondeo, Focus & 406 drivers when cornering put a big smile on my face, The 206 I have now isn't as good around the corners as the 405, But the 206 feels more planted to the tarmac & a lot safer.

If you want a car that really corners then it has to be the later 306s, The normal ones are brilliant fun & the GTI 6 is out of this world

Well, just thought I'd update you all..

I phoned a local scrappie ( a good one on past experience ), and quoted the VIN numbers, they said they had one, and would have it off the car for me the next day.

Turned up, it wasn't off the car, so we waited 20 minutes for them to get it.

Returned home, and someone fitted it for me, but found that the hole on the outer edge was too small for the hub.

Took it for the mot ( pre-booked ), expecting it to fail on the bush, the leaking exhaust ( which I could not be bother to patch at the time since it would fail ). Well, it only failed on the leaking exhaust, how fed-up I was !

Had the exhaust welded up yesterday, the wishbone replaced with the correct one ( excellent condition compared to mine - which was shot ! ), and it's going in for the retest tomorrow.

Fingers crossed.
