XM and some very odd clicking....

Hi Gang,

I've got an R reg 2L CT Turbo auto XM which for the most part drives well (odd shimmy at speed, but that's for another post), but the thing that's getting on my wick is a hyperactive indicator relay (i think)...

Symptoms:
Sometimes the indicator relay clicks hyperactively when not indicating... (there are no external signs - ie the lights don't flash) and when i indicate the clicking settles down to its normal speed tick tick tick... but when i cancel the indicator the clicking speeds up...

This is not a constant ie. it doesn't always happen, and it doesn't seem to affect anything but it is rather annoying, and i expect that it can only get worse!

Any thoughts?

I think you will find that its down to a faulty indicator switch.

Maybe try operating the hazard warning switch a few times.
It can cause indicator faults.

Well known problem - the contacts on the indicator switch wear and leave deposits of conducting material that then gives intermittent operation when you don't need it. If you take the indicator assembly apart and blow out all the conductive dust and then reassemble it, it will work for as long as before again until it starts doing the same thing again!

So the indicator switch - by that do you mean in the stearing column assembly or somewhere else?

I'm a longtime owner of XMs but (mercifully) have a great garage so do very little to them myself so i'm a bit in the dark!

Yes, the switch on the steering column.

I wouldn't bother... they have a habit of correcting themselves after a few days of mad clicking.
