Does it really help cleaning injectors , boosting octane and lubricating fuel pumps ?

Is it worth it

If it is which brand is worth it..........??

I think opinions differ on injector cleaners- the manufacturers like to avoid telling you whats in them on the bottle, but they smell suspiciously like nothing more than paraffin, so you pays your money and takes your choice.........and a bit of veggie in the tank takes care of pump lubrcation!!

I find a can of Forte is the best(if you can find it).I also use Wynns & STP.I find it reduces the smoke a fair bit on mine when i put some in a full tank.

Without doubt it does! Forte is by far the best and works well to clean and lubricate the whole system. In my experience I have found Wynns products to be inefectual, expensive, and at best mediochre in their results.

I tried Fortes in both my diesel, and Jeans old mazda about two years ago..

The effect on my diesel was not noticeable, but the car was running very well anyway..

Cooking oil has a bigger effect, deeper quieter engine note, and is noticebly quicker, top speed is not effected though..

The effect of Fortes on the petrol 1600 16V fi Mazda was quite dramatic, it immediately cured the rough tickover the car had, (caused by sticky valves I think).. And overal the car performed much better afterwards..

After years of buying additives - I came across a site in USA that tested loads of them.

Rather amusingly - the largest component in the additive - was KEROSENE!!!!
Another component in some was WATER!!! (In small doses).
In the vast majority there was very little that actually did any good!!!!

No wonder they produce less smoke if you put two cans of mainly Kersoene in a low tank and go for a MOT - it burns cleaner!!!!! So the smoke test is 'fooled' as you are not running on Diesel!!!!!

Forte does seem to work well - and I have just put 2 pots in my XM with 15L of fuel.

One of the ways that it is supposed to work is by increasing the combustion temp in the combustion chamber - and so burning off carbon deposits. Maybe that's why they seem to work well if you add two cans before a fill up and a long journey down the motorway.

I've always bought Redex - and put a bit in the tank.
I don't think it has a noticeable effect - but it will help lubricate the fuel pump and injectors - and that is VERY important in todays'c climate of low sulphur diesel.

I've seen loads of pumps worn out on cars and vans due to today's low lubricant diesels.
So if you want to keep the repair man away - a dose of lubricant at every fill up is cheap insurance.

I have also had good results with Protec diesel additive.

My local Jaguar Garage has a machine that allows the cars to be run on pure Forte fuel injection cleaner - for petrol cars. I'll ask if they do it for diesels too. Jaguar recommend it for cleaning the injectors, combustion chamber and cats.

HOwever - the diesel specialists that I use - who rebuild diesel pumps and injectors don't rate additives as a solution. They are OK to maintain a vehicle - but if it's worn - no amount of additive will help.

I have found that removing the injectors, and fitting new tips inside the injectors makes a huge difference. Economy increases as the diesel is better atomised. Less black smoke too!!!

I was shocked at the 'new' noise my VW truck engine was making after new injector tips!!!
When I complained - the oldest mechanic put his head over the engine - and told me that the high metallic pinging sound I could now hera was the injectors 'pinging off' - and that is how they are supposed to be!!!! A clean sharp ping!!!!
My XM will be in for new injector tips once I have everything else sorted.

Is it OK to put veggie oil in all 1.9TD's or is it dependant on pump type??

Miller's Diesel additive seems to come out well in tests.

I tried to buy direct from them in bulk a few years ago - but got a deal with Protec in the end off my local Partco at a wonderful price.

Hi

depends onn how much you would want to put in really

but adding in 5% would not do any harm.

Currently running the hdi on biodiesel at B10 and the xud at B30 slowly increasing the xud up to about B80.

Both cars run better and also seem a bit quicker

Miller's Diesel Power Plus, used to be called Dieselclean IIRC

I remember the first time I used it (on a previous Xant which had done about 50K) there was a noticable difference, less so later. I squidge some in every 3 or 4 tankfulls. I stopped buying the 500ml bottles (at £7.50 ish

) when I spooted a 5l can in my local Wilco for £30-odd
