As i was driving home just now while in traffic i could hear an awful grumbling noise from under the bonnet. After having a look it was coming from the aux belt area, the bottom run of it was bouncing around like an elastic band. This noise and bouncing would stop if i gave it some revs.
So further along the road i hear a noise like driving over grit and it being thrown up on the underside of the car. Got out to have a look belt was still on but has stripped on one edge so i am left with half a belt.
What could have caused this? Could it be the wrong size belt its been on for under 2 yrs.
I will have to get a new one but also what could the grumbling noise be?
Getting the new belt should be fun i understand i need to know what air/con compressor i have to get the right one, is this a GSF or Citroen task?
Thanks

If you are really lucky there will still be a number visible on the belt, eg
6PK 1736 which is 6 peaks ( the ribs ) and a circumferance of 1736cm, failing that, take it off and measure it.
My belt went the same way but the bit that came off went under the timing cover and through the cam belt out by about 2 teeth.

Any idea what caused it? I had something similar happen about two weeks after having the timing belt and auxilliary belt replaced by a garage. They claimed a stone must have hit the timing belt cover causing it to foul both belts. The aux belt wes shredded on the side next to the timing cover.wotsupnow wrote: My belt went the same way but the bit that came off went under the timing cover and through the cam belt out by about 2 teeth.

With my belt off the idler was very noisy, I removed it ( alan key in centre with long bar on it......) turned it over and carefully prised out the oil seal, it was completely dry inside with only tiny bits of grease left in, but didn't seem to have any play sideways so still not sure why the belt split lengthways. Maybe there was some drag from the pulley and the belt sliding over it got hot.

Would this problem with only having part of the belt and bad idle pulley also stop the rear end from lifting when moving the lever in the cab.
Rear goes up when i start but will not go higher when lever is in high mode only the front goes up. Would that be something to do with the belt slipping

I would have thought it more likely to be the mechanism from the lever being siezed up. Your hydraulic pump is clearly working as the front goes up ok.gav425 wrote:Would this problem with only having part of the belt and bad idle pulley also stop the rear end from lifting when moving the lever in the cab.
