My never ending search for the perfect car continues. Anyone got any views on the Pug 406 V6? As much as I love Citroens, I'm struggling to find anything modern that doesn't either terrify or bore me!
Have seen a 406 V6 GLX 97 with 57k for around a grand. Has had cambelt along with a water pump at around 45k. Manual box.

That's a lot of car for not much money. Pretty quick too.
Just make sure it has been well-maintained and at that mileage, you are approaching a cambelt change. It would be nice if that had already been done.
I used to have a 406 GLX and it was very well appointed inside, much better than a similar age Xantia. The roadholding is OK, but I wanted better so bought a Xantia Activa as a replacement.

Have been looking at the coupes too but they aren't so cheap! Is it worth paying extra just because it looks better?
The one I was looking at was on Ebay and has now been pulled by the Ebay Authorities...

It's almost like a go-kart making turns and pulls great once it passes 4000rpms. Travelling at 60 or 130 miles per hour is the same.
Having one, i find it a "good" car, though not a Citroën as i miss the suspension everytime i ride it, too soft and bouncy, even with the stiffer springs and shocks in relation to the standard 406's.

I am mighty impressed with my mates 405 TD saloon,
at 120,000 miles its as tight as a new car and has a good turn of speed, air con, leccy everything etc and pick one up now for about 450 quid on an M or N plate.

Yeah but it is still too soon after my 306 Dturbo which I got rid of primarily as I was fed up of the short power band, turbo lag and rattle.
I still rate them though as I've not really found much to match it for the combination of ride and handling. In fact I found my mates BX TZD harsher for ride!
Work is going well at the moment so I'd like to treat myself with something that sounds magnificent and drives nicely.
"406 V6" - is your car manual or auto? I do find that right hand drive PSA motors can have a heavy clutch (as my 306 did) which is a concern. Maybe I should go for maximum waft and get an auto...

If you want it for pulling out on the lights, it takes a bit, because the torque converter won't let the revs go past 3000rpms or so, a bit bellow the "explosion" area, but as soon as it takes away..take care!
It can keep up the pace with a 106 Rallie easily, but the latter loses beyond 130kms/h, hehehe

A friend of a friend bought one of these, and I had the dubious honour of doing the belt and coolant pump. If you do get one, just hope you don't have to do that little (massive!) job.
There's also a fairly large amount of electronics in one of these, and the spark plugs are a pain to change.
And yes, they are rather quick, but I did think the gearchange was rather baulky and slow, meaning you have to take your time over changing gear, and you can't make as fast progress as the engine power would suggest.

Blimey, nippy motor!
The one I was looking at had the water pump and cambelt replaced at 46k which didn't seem very many miles to me!
Knowing me, I'll probably end up with a Fiat Panda or something anyway! Despite being a car nut, I don't half buy some rubbish!
