406 2.2 HDi?

Post by dvhttn »

Hi Chaps,

I had an unfortunate coming together with the back of a 205 GTi with my 405 GTDT - I managed to put it 'beyond economic repair' ... Ho hum ... all my fault but at least I'm fully comp. and managed to get a good valuation on the 405.

Anyhow, looking at replacing it and looking at the 406. Wondering about the 2.2 HDi as it seems there are more of them about with low mileages. Anyone got anything to say about these beasts? Reliability, economy etc?

Cheers

My Dad is on his 2nd 406 HDI est.The 1st 1 was a 90bhp GLX X reg(not a 2.2).He had this for just over 3 yrs with no probs at all.Nothing went wrong in the 80k+ miles. He liked it so much that when it came to be replaced he got another 1.An 03 110bhp HDI SE.So far after 2 yrs & 40k no probs at all.
After driving both cars, the 110bhp goes really well.I have used it to tow our heavy caravan when mine was off the road. There was no shortage of power,it pulled really strongly. That was the 2.0 110 HDI.I like to think that the 2.2 would fly with its 136bhp! :D I had the use of it in the summer for a few weeks,& it averaged 50mpg in mixed driving, sometimes a bit fast! :D I woild expect the 2.2 would be about 5 or so mpg down on that.I found the ride a bit harsh(but i have a Xantia)& the car has 16"alloys with 55 profile tyres,so that did`nt help. But it was relaxing to drive, with plenty of room for me at 6ft 3in.I`ve been looking at 2.2`s as well, thinking of buying one.I think all are GTX`s,& the top of the range Executives with full leather. His SE has a very good level of std kit,a/c,elec every thing ,sat nav, half leather, etc.
I know the 406 as a whole has done very bad in the new topgear survey, about 10 places from the bottom! But i take these surveys with a pince of salt.My Dads very happy with his,& i certainly would consider getting one.
Sorry i rambled on,but hope it helps. :)

Hi

The 2.2 litre 136 bhp HDI lump is best avoided, Its a bit rough, Ask any Peugeot technician & they will say the same

The 406 is best suited to the 2 litre 110 bhp HDI lump if you want diesel power.

Thanks chaps.

Powerlee: when you say *rough*, what do you mean? Rough running, rough sounding or some other definition of dodgy ....? Seems like with a 25% (ish) power and torque hike over the 110 it should be a great engine ..?

Hi

The 2.2 HDI is a bit agricultural & rough running compared to the two versions of the 2 litre HDI.

Test drive a 136 & a 110 HDI & see which you like, I would pick the 110 bhp version everytime.

Have heard that the 2.2 engine needs a new particle filter with the eloyes fluid being topped up. Needs to be done every 50K. Seems it's a Citroen dealer job only and the engine goes into 'limp' mode if you ignore the warning. Citroen charge about 450 quid for the job.

Further to the above - The latest 2litre engine puts out 138BHP and according to Citroens techie brochure, the 2litre engine is more powerful than the 2.2. Certainly the 2ltre has a higher towing capability.

Old 2.2 HDI,136BHP & 232 lbft torque,new 2.0 HDI,138 BHP &236 lbft torque.Old 2.0 HDI 110 bhp & 188 lbft torque.
You woild certainly have a larger range of cars if you went for the 2.0 110bhp 406.It seemed that that was the most popular. You could then have it "black boxed",or chiped etc to 130-140+bhp,with about 220+ lbft.Theres loads of companys that can do that,or DIY.Would cost around £350+.You would then have the same power as a 2.2 HDI. :)

Good point np. Who are the recommended tuners? Would rather a proper ecu remap rather than a plugin ...

Heres a list of most of them here http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... php?t=4175
I think some of them plug into the diognostic port on later cars. Some are connected under the bonnet. It all depends on what you want. Most will boost power & torque by at least 20bhp/20lbft.Sometimes as much as 50bhp.I had my Xantia boosted on the fuel pump(mechanical) a few yrs ago now.Made quite a difference.I would certainly have a diesel done again.
I read in the paper yesterday that Vauxhall are working on a high performance version of their/Saabs 1.9 CDTI 150 BHP,to produce 210bhp!!! :D for a VXR Vectra & Astra.Turbo Diesels have come a long way.

Ta np. I had had the 405 looked at by the Devdoctor and it made a big difference. The HDi is a different kettle of fish though which is why I asked ...
