Knocking From Rear

BX14RE 1989. A friend has borrowed my car for a couple of days and has told me she is getting a knocking noise from the rear of the car all the time. Being told this over the phone, I know as much as you.I guessed that it might be something to do with a ride height adjuster not recognising that it has reached the appropriate height. Therefore I have suggested raising the car to wheelchange height and back down again to clear whatever is sticking. Does this sound a viable diagnosis and (temporary) cure. What else might need doing? Where should I be looking?

I'd be inclined to suggest that she sets the suspension on a high setting, stand back from the rear of the car & look at the rear wheels.
If they look I I that's OK but if they are / I or / \ then it's the rear swing arm bearings that will need replacing.

Failing that, it could be an exhaust pipe knocking on the bodywork or a rear sway bar also.

If you're not 100 on the condition of your rear exhaust damper/piping I'd go for that first. The wifes BX has a habit of doing just that just before the rear box falls off . . .

My Xantia used to make knockings...
1) Going over speed bumps from the back - rear arm bearings - replaced - doesn't happen now.
2) The rear exhaust mounting bolts through to the back panel behind the bumper - the bolt holes are rusting a little, and the bolts are a little loose - although nowhere near dangerous. This was fixed when the middle section was replaced recently.

I have also experienced a knocking (iregular pattern?)from the rear of my ZX, but generally not when going over bumps but more noticeable when turning a corner? Any similarities??

Apparently the problem has cured itself. Don't you just love faults like that. Thanks for all the tips though, hopefully it will have the guts to do it when I'm driving next time. (I've told her to make sure the corpses are dead in future or Macdonalds won't pay as much for them.) Thanks again lads.
