M5 Speed Cameras

Unread post by np »

Noticed this morning that there is a large number of what look like "safety cameras" been put in place on the M5 around the Avonmouth(Bristol) area.Between jct 19 & 20.Loads (about every 300 yds!) on the split level section. They still have covers over them,& no signs have been put up.This has to be 1 of the slowest sections on the M5 with bank holiday traffic etc :? .Even now its slow in the evenings on my way home.Still.............
I know we are all "carefull" drivers on this forum, but you have been warned. :)

Was wondering where they'd gone from the M42. They were set right on the speed limit in force (40MPH) because of road works.

Bristol can keep them

You want to come to Blackpool - bloody millions of the buggers - all set to trip 1mph above the limit ("Blackpool is 30 or less, no need to speed" despite the huge wide roads in the middle of nowhere)

Fortunatly - if you moan to the local Scamera partneship they will quash fines for offences of 31, 32 or 33 MPH.

I still find it funny watching people speed and then brake for average speed cameras although it seems unfair not to advertise what they are. The A428 near Bedford has them on a section.

That said, the M1 had some on a section of roadworks and had BIG sings warning that they checked average speed and still people drive fast. It's no wonder they claw in so much cash if people ignore the warnings.

I work in Nottingham, which was the first city to get these cameras.

On a couple of recent trips, two different stories:

1) On our way up to Orkney recently, the northern section of the M6 has these cameras - clearly marked "average speed check cameras", I set the cruise to the posted speed, and relaxed. Some people overtook me.

2) Near me, there is a stretch of road between Bawtry and Gainsborough, which is posted 50, and averaging cameras signed. I was following a car and a combine harvester, doing about 30mph, and the car daren't overtake even though the road was fairly clear. I overtook them both, peaking about 65mph while overtaking, and then slowing down to 50mph for the rest of the zone. My reasoning for this was that the slow entry to the zone for about a mile would balance out the peak speed, giving me an average of somewhere between 40 and 50 over the zone ( the road was clear - no traffic pressures to maintain speed ). People don't think of this.

Equally, on the M6, we were overtaken by a car doing at least 80 in this zone, and I guarantee he was not caught - anyone guess why ?

Close :D

He actually left the motorway at the next junction, which was half way through the zone, and therefore because he didn't go through two cameras, his "disappeared" from the system.

I read that until a recent software update, these cameras could not cope with you entering the zone and exiting the zone in different lanes, but this has aparently been fixed now.

Amazing they continue with this scam two years after the DfT found speed cameras in roadworks increase the number of accidents. :x
