battery light

Hi have had a look at the archive but cant see an answer so here goes. Car is 1.9TD xantia ,when ignition is turned on battery light does not come on but when car is running the light commes on and will go out as the revs rise . Where do I start to look .PS its just over a year old pps the alternator not the car .Regards John
