Intercahngeable starter motors (from 405)?

Unread post by sdcoomber »

Does anyone know if a BX starter motor will fit a Pug 405 TD? What are the differences between the BX16 petrol starter and the BX17TD?
Curiously addicted to them!

Diesel engines are very heavy to start due to the high compression (22.1). In the late 1980's starters with a reduction gear were introduced by (Mitsubishi?) and I think these were fitted to the BX TD before the N/A diesel engines.

I would expect a diesel engine starter to be a more powerful and robust unit than a petrol one but so far as fittings and teeth numbers go I have no information.

All of the diesel starters are interchangeable between 1905/1769 diesels and TDs there are apparently some differences but I have never encountered them, and as a bonus the old sierra 2.3 diesel pug 505 one will work but will crank slower due to not being geared, I cut an old petrol engine starter about to make it fit a diesel engine once but it lacked enough power to spin the higher compression diesel engine.

The BX TD starter will fit the 405TD. The TD starter is a heavier duty unit that the N/A. My BX N/A 1900D has a Mitsu geared starter from a Pug 205D which works fine.
