Smoking Xantia 1.9td

Post by soupy_sam »

When I start my Xantia 1.9 TD it has started to be smoky white smoke from exhaust and also quite a bit from under the bonnet at the back of the engine near heatrt bulkhead.

The water system seems fine , Oil levels are fine, and performance is fine I changed glow plugs 2000miles ago.

Any ideas please

Is it blowing out loads of fumes from the crankcase? If you remove the filler cap are there loads of fumes?

If so it sounds like defective piston rings/bores

White fumes from the exhaust are unburnt fuel - normally glowplugs or an air leak on startup only. However unless there is an exhaust blow at the manifold/head or manifold/ipe joint the fumes coming from under the bonnet would seem to be excessive blow by.

I would go with Jeremy and suggest that it is unburnt fuel on start up due to either low compression or faulty glowplug/s and a leak in your exhaust system causing smoke under the bonnet. If its OK when warm, I wouldn't worry about it.

No smoke from crankcase filler cap

Only Smokes on startup

Smoke is getting worse can see like a jet coming from far nearside rear of engine about 10cm in and down near manifold.

Could it be Manifold Gasket??

How do I dismantle things to be able to see what is wrong? Where do I start?

Find out where its coming from first - either visually (could use a small mirror if the smoke is visible) or by ear - you could use a piece of tube - put one end to your ear and put the other end where you think the leak is.

Hi Guys,
Have a look at your air filter and the casing also. If the filter is blocked you will get a large (ish) amount of smoke and you may get smoking if the case is cracked too.
