Xantia - Fuel gauge

Hi everyone,

I have a 93 Xantia and the fuel gauge is always on zero (the orange light is on), however every few days or so, the gauge shows the correct fuel level for few minutes...

It looks like the most common problem is the gauge sender, however I think (and hope) if it was the problem, it shouldn't send the correct level only every few days...

What do you think?

Not the sender - but the cable and/or contacts. Corrosion does its magic on a 12y old car
