Rarest XUD powered vehicle?

Post by bikeboyz »

I was lucky enough to get a huge print out from the DoT on Peugeot vehicles licenced at the end of the year for Club Peugeot UK. It got me thinking looking through the models, which car of any brand is now the rarest for XUD power.

Is it the Talbot Horizon? or FSO Caro? or ..... your suggestion....

We had a thread a while ago about all of the cars that got the XUD

http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... hp?t=13624

There were some pretty obscure cars mentioned but not the two you've just named...

Honda Concerto? They all seem to be fitted with petrol power. Or perhaps the Talbot Solara (did it have a XUD?)/Express - Alex.

I'd say it must be the Horizon, can't remember the last time I saw a petrol one never mind a diesel.

There was an amphibian called the Hobbycar (I think) powered by an XUD engine. It also ran on Hydropneumatic suspension.

I hope the pipes were well rustproofed if it was designed for going in sea water !
I have visions of;

Pleiades: "I'm afraid the octopus behind the engine has gone."

Hobbycar owner: "Oh at last. Now can you try to get rid of some of the barnacles......."

I'll get me coat........

The Mahindra jeep used the XD series engine from the 504/505. The Honda Concerto Diesel was only available in france with the 1905cc XUD, but built at Longbridge. Solara not sure it was even dieselised. Tagora was the 2304cc XD2S.

The solara did receive the 1905D engine for one or two markets. The design of the car was almost identical to the Horizon, so it wasn't a difficult installation. These must be like hen's teeth now.

I haven't seen a diesel horizon in about 7 years, which is a shame, as I had 3 of them many years ago. Very very rust/rot prone cars... worse than many anything else I've ever seen. (with the possible exception of a fiat 131)

You probably don't see them now as most were run totally into the ground as minicabs.
As for the most rust prone car ever, I propose the Lancia Beta!!! I had the saloon version-lovely engine but attached to a body apparently made of toilet roll and candy floss!

So what is the most exclusive/rarely powered XUD motor around then? And as for the most rust prone car around - The FIAT Strada, BL/Austin Princess and the BL/Austin Montego - I went out one morning and it had fizzled away in the rain #-o - Alex.

Is the question "rarest XUD powered vehicle ever made" or "rarest XUD powered vehicle on the UK roads" ?

I would think that rarest ever made is something like the FSO pick-up, and rarest on UK roads would be something like the solara D, since it was never sold here.

The local taxi firm had a fleet (!) of 3 FSO Caro(?) Estates with the 1.9XUD a few years ago. You could hear the rear axle rattling about before you heard the engine though...
