Peugeot 406 vibration.

Unread post by Quinny »

On my 406 at 60mph+,there is a vibration coming from the car.
It works like this....
Vibrate for 3 seconds,then a 5 second gap,vibrate for 3 seconds,then a 5 second gap.....you get the picture?
Now,it's none of the following,as they've all been done:
Wheel balancing
Tyre pressures
Tracking
4 Tyres fairly recently
Rear horizontal link bars.
So does anyone know what it is?
On a side note.A friend of mine hired, through work,a Land Rover Discovery a few weeks a go,and that did the same.

This sounds very much like you have the front 2 wheels slightly out of balance by about the same amount.
They go in and out of phase, creating constructive and destructive vibrations through the steering rack.
I would have the front wheels balanced again, but by someone else. I had a wheel balance done on a wheel/tyre that was practically brand new (still had all the moulding sprues on it) and it was 185 grammes out of balance.... yep, 185!!!! Must have either been balanced by Stevie Wonder, or someone thought it would be REALLY funny to come along in the middle of the night and put some extra lead weights on my wheels!?!?!
Land Rover Discoveries are very different beasts, as they have a live front axle with steering swivels. Many things can cause vibration in them.

Yes I'll try that.
I'll go to a different tyre house, and have them re-done,as it seems that only the front is affected.

Try getting them dynamically balanced on the car, if you can find somewhere that still does that. Make sure the mating faces between the wheel and hub are surgically clean (especially if you have alloys) or the wheel won't sit straight, no matter how well balanced it might be.
Good luck.
