Hi guys,
I am new to this forum and realise that there not many 406 automatics(auto) in this forum. Just a few questions if you have some answers. I have 2 406's one manual and one auto and both 2.0 petrol engines.
Dont really have any problems the cars. They are really reliable but the auto is a little sluggish. Just fitted grounding wires with voltage stabilizer. It made the lights brighter, aircond cooler, radio frequency and sound is better and i feel with this extra earth it made the car(talking about the auto) a little less sluggish. So my question is how come the 406 autos are underpowered when taking off? Is this a manufacturing defect? The car certainly looks great and beautiful to drive on the top end speed. I just wonder why because the 3.0 V6 uses the same 4HP20 gearbox and its ok pretty pwerful. So i dont think the gearbox is underpowered. And whats with the downshift feature, sometimes its so annoying that everytime you hit the brakes the downshift is disturbing. And its the same with the AL4 gearbox too. I have been driving all kinds of Peugeots 504 manual and auto, 505 2.0 SR, 405 GTX, 405 SRI both autos no problems at all great great cars. Don't get me wrong love the 406 auto except for its sluggishness when take off and the downshift. Any suggestions on how to improve this?

IIRC the first gear on an auto is slightly longer than that of the manual box so it will feel sluggish in comparison to the manual, yes on a 3.0 v6 it wont feel that way asthat has the power to get through the gear easily. The only thing you can do is look to bring the torque curve into the lower rev range.
