XM electric windows - help please.

Post by Robin »

OK lads, it's my turn to ask for some help and guidance.
The drivers elctric window on the XM failed and on investigation I have found a broken cable. Thats no surprise but is this just a new cable or a whole assembly I am in for?
Also, can I do this with the window in place or do I have to remove the whole assembly?
Many thanks, Robin

robin, you have to take the whole assembley out[haynes manual is ok for this]but be very careful that you don't force anything,it is very fiddly but can be done.i got a new assembley from euro c.p.and it was a straight forward exchange.

It's possible to just change the cable. It'll need some diy-ing though. I've done it once and found it all rather straightforward. Also I'm quite sure there is a guide on how to do it on here somewhere.

Thanks lads. I am up for the DIY bit and just the cable for the sheer challenge of it. My problem is the car is in use every day and I don't have a day 'off' for around a fortnight so it will have to stay shut!

Robin,
I'm going through the same thing with my Xantia at the moment. If you can help it try not to press the winder buttons until you have fixed the cable as when the cable is not under tension it can tie itself in some knots around the drum that the electric motor drives and chew up the grooves in the drum somewhat.
I think I'm going to try and find a complete assemly from the local scrappie as I can't find wire of the correct diameter (important), and I may have chewed my drum up too much doing the above. There is a description of the fix in the "useful fixes" section of this forum
Good luck,
Mark.

Well I have just checked the current prices and at £264 for the assembly, ouch!
Tried to get a used one and rang four specialist French dismantlers. All said 'we only get asked for the window mechanisms with XM's' so I guess it's a weakness. Mine failed due to lack of lubrication, the cable was rusty. It did not make any unusual noise at all, in fact it was always very quiet. So out with the oil can on the other three doors fast!!!
Anyone got a spare assembly around?

Robin, if you are handy with a soldering iron, I would take the route of soldering the wires together rather than using connector, and then using some heat shrink insulation tube to insulate it.
