Deisel pump issues
It was lucky I had a day off work today as my injector pump started leaking again- think they must have given me the wrong O ring last time. Anyway, as it happens there is a Bosch Deisel shop in Loughborough so I went down to get the right part-Fitted it as I did 6 months ago and tried putting the pump together-however, for some reason, this time I couldnt get the lid to fit without unscrewing an adjustment screw of "some kind" before attatching the lid- fitted lid, and tightened adjuster screw up to "roughly" the same position as before- started the car and it just revved at 4000 RPM instead of idleing after sounding like it was fireing on one cylinder and not quite starting for ages- It quickly stopped again and wouldnt restart- I adjusted the screw again, this time it started but idled very slowly and didnt respond at all to accelerator. I eventually concluded that the screw im talking about will make the car idle faster if screwed in and slower if screwed out, and if idleing quicker, the engine would sound a lot more snappy when the accelerator is pressed-ie more responsive. All ive managed to do is to get the car to idle at about 850 RPM and respond as it used to by carefully finding a happy relationship between the screw and the throttle spindle- I was wondering-is this OK, or is this something that has to be adjusted very accurately by a specialist? Was worried it might be the mixture screw- on the thread it has a metal band wraped round it.Suppose I should have bought the Citroen Deisel Haynes by now! Cheers, Adam

The screw with the metal strap around it is the maximum fuelling screw. Adjusting it does also radically alter the idle speed. Usually, it should be somewhere near being as far in as the metal band, plus a 1(ish)mm washer will allow it to be. Then you adjust the accelerator lever and the idle speed screw (on the "back" of the pump) together to ensure correct idle and anti-stall.
It sounds like you've managed to get it fairly close to where it should be. Remember that with the maximum fuelling screw, screwing it in increases fuelling (which somehow seems the wrong way to me). Just one complete turn of this screw makes a massive difference.

Cheers guys- yep, fastandfurious, the distance between the metal band and the pump is about 1 mm so thats reasuring. All I wanted to do initially was set up the lever that operates the throttle spindle a bit better as the pedal box was replaced and travel was better- I fiddled with it and then when I restarted it, it was literally squirting fuel out- The new O ring feels a lot tighter than the old one, is definately for the right pump, and there is no sign of leakage- Thank god. It fixed it last time I replaced it for the purposes of passing the MOT retest, but didnt feel as tight, and for that reason didnt last too long-It had shrunk a lot when I removed it today. Was all very stressful- even the anti stall/cold start spring fell down into the pump when I was putting the lid on, so I had to phyphen the fuel out with a brake bleeding pipe, and fish around for it- evbentually reverting to one of those mini magnets on the end of an aerial! Just glad the old seal failed on the road outside my house rather than on a long motorway trip.

Took the car to work and back today and things are better than they were-in fact id go so far as to say that the car has transformed completely- I didnt have to come out of 5th gear up hills like I used to do- it feels almost like its got a turbo! Sort of picks up as soon as you hit 2200 RPM. Id obviously got something badly wrong the first time I put the pump together-Mind you it always used to do the official top speed- Id be interested to see what it would do now- mind you its in the red at top speed so I wouldnt push it any further.
