Hi CJB - You do indeed have to undo something to drain off any water in the fuel filter. The drain screw which needs to be opened is right at the bottom of the filter housing. It's in such a position that it's difficult to get to, and I usually remove the entire filter housing, clean it out and replace the filter. To remove the housing, you need to undo the two banjo bolts and the two bolts holding the housing. Try not to remove the copper washers from the banjos.

John,
Thanks for responding so quicky and for the info.
I having trouble undoing anything ! or finding what you have mentioned - my 405 is M reg, would this make a difference ?
On the front of the fuel filter unit appears to be a 'bleed, twist screw' which can be turned with the fingers and diesel comes out when you press what I'm told is the fuel pump (top left of the engine.)
Could it be that the warning light is giving wrong signals ?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Regards, CJB
