Xantia 2.1 TD (1997) Engine reving on starting

A strange problem has just started happening on my Xantia 2.1TD. When I start it up first thing in the morning, it revs up to 1600rpm. This then fluctuates between 1400 and 1600rpm untill it gets to the 80'C point on the temperature gauge. It has never done aything like this before. Does anyone know what has causedthis to happen?

If it has a mechanical injection pump it could be air getting into the system, if its electronic, I dont know, hopefully soneone else will!

I have seen diesels rev themselves when the fuel filter is partly blocked or has water in it, typically the engines rev but have no power, air leaks in the system can cause similar symptoms too.

My oil is between the marks. Checked it the other day.
