Xsara External Temperature Reading

Hello,
I was wondering if someone could help me. Our Xsara has an external temperature guage (1.4LX) and it's stopped working. Ocassionally it flashes up for a fraction of a second when the ignition is switched on, but normally it's just 2 bars " - - " instead of the temperature.
Is this a common problem, and where do I look? The Haynes book for the Pre-Facelift model is useless.....

The most likely cause is a faulty sensor. In the XM it is in the n/s door mirror.

Is there a nipple under the near side wing mirror? if so that's where it is.

Hi... well... I'm pretty sure now that replacing a broken mirror (N/S) has resulted in it not working. The dealer supplied the wrong mirror....
I might see how hard it is to swap the internals over... somehow....
