Xantia Steering Hidraulic HISSSSS

What's that hisssss that goes on when I'm turning the steering wheel either way ?
Is it normal on Xantias? Or could be a problem on the hidraulic system ?

Mine does this as well. I'd assumed it was normal.

I have the same Hissss but Citroen say it is normal on Xantias, althought I cant remeber it doing it on my BX.

It is indeed. Especially when ssssnaking around parked cars in our street.

i think you will find that it is the norm, as when i first brought my xantia, i asked about the hissing from the steering area, & was told "thats the sound the hydralic power steering makes when the car is at low revs". so i think that you will find that it's not a problem to worry about.

I don't think it's normal - i drove a couple of them myself and there was no hisssss from no where, my bx is doing the same thing now and it didn't use to

Yes it's perfectly normal for the Xantia to do this.
Other makes of cars can be different to this, and not make a noise until they are on full lock, and held there.
I knew this mate who was troubled by this, and thought his car had a problem. I had to let him know that it had to do this as it needed to have a pressure relief while on full lock, and as the P.S. fluid flow was being redirected by the pressure relief valve, the noise was a consequence of this.
The Xantia makes the noise because of it's design all of the time, and is more noticable when you manoeuvre at slow speeds.

Yep, all quite normal, every hydraulic Citroën I've had has done it. Quite normal on LDV vans too, just 100 times louder just to make the worst driving experience possible even worse!!

Yes I tend to notice it when parking on my Xantia, but that's probably because the amount of other noise from the car is less.
By that I mean there is less engine noise, no road noise, the stereo is turned down, or off. So while you are parking it is more obvious.
With other makes of vehicles, I have noticed that the steering column tube can actually transmit the noise away from the source, direct it at the driver, and actually make it sound louder than it actually is, by amplifying the noise, and the problem.
