alternator - black postive cover

Post by shaunthesheep »

hi all,
just fitted the radio supresser to my alternator to cure interference on mw, had to fit it to the thick postive lead at the output bolt, while loosening this bolt off the black plastic surround snapped off in four peices, should i be worried about this cover or not??

If you mean the plastic sleeve that insulates the positive terminal bolt from the alternator body, yes! I can't remember if it's fitted from the inside or outside, but at the very least glue the bits back in place, otherwise you risk a burnt out alternator when the positive output comes directly in contact with the negative body! Cracks can easily get filled with road slush during the winter and since this contains salt, it works as a conductor and may overload your alternator.

nisk, the alternator is still isolated becasue there still is the bottom of the plastic still surrounding the bolt, the pieces that are snapped off are the four black pronges that the rubber plug sits in to cover the postive terminal.
