xantia1.8i 16v hickup on accel'

my t reg 1.8i 16v 29k xantia "dies" when pushing hard thru the gears..mainly at the start of second.
if i press the accel pedal too far after 2nd gear selection, there is no response, a slight dead spot occurs, and only when i lift off will it pick up smoothly again.....it can be quite annoying, even dangerous in some situations, as it is without power for about 5 full seconds, just when you need it.....its almost like missing a gear and getting stranded
i thought fuel injection was supposed to be instant? the old "flood" problem of carbs a thing of the past if you ask for too much gas at one go.,,, at plod on speeds its ok, its just when asking for a bit more than usual any comments/fault knowledge welcome atb norm

When did you last change the fuel filter? Your problems sound like fuel starvation, and with a partially blocked filter the system will function normally until maximum flow is demanded. Similar problems could occur with a lazy fuel pump but I'd look at the filter first.
