Battery Warning Lamp

Post by tonyb1 »

Off to my bank holiday boot sale today I noticed when I got into the car that the battery warning light was on - before I had put the key in the ignition [V] The car starts and runs fine and the battery light goes out as it should do when running. But when I stop the car and turn off engine and take keys out, the battery light stays on? Also, the power to the stereo and windows is still on, just like when you turn the key one click. I think that the ignition may be on it's way out, or is it something more simple? Any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers. Tony

Check your fuses, it may be something as simple as a fuse blown. Dont forget to check your fuse box under the bonnet too.

I would think thay you probably have a faulty ignition switch.

Fuses all ok Paul, thanks. This is strange, but on my way to work this morning (still dark), I noticed the hazard light switch was not illuminated on the dash with the other switches, I gave it a flick with my finger and it came back on - and the battery lamp went out. Is this coincidence or are these related??? I'll still check out the ignition switch. Thanks Peter. Thinking about it, I've 'fixed' lots of my dying lamps with a flick!

The ignition lamp is connected between the alternator and one of the on/live contacts of the ignition switch, if something else is also connected to the same contact it could be receiving current through that, if perhaps there is a bad earth contact some where.

Definitly sounds like a bad earth/oxidized contacts to me.

Another thought, check your fuse for the alternator, it must have a supply to make it work so if the fuse has blown, the warning light will be light up.
