'Innovative' sphere seal? Please vote!!

Is the culprit innovative or a prime candidate for the Guinness book of Rectums? This is the rear sphere I was battling with, now I know why![;)] You may have to cut and paste the link!!

Hard to tell from the picture whats there... is that some kind of loctite on the thread ?? Certainly the shreded o-ring wouldn't help [:D]
It didnt do any damage to the thread in the cylinder while removing it did it ?

It looks like ptfe tape on the thread, but the bit at the bottom looks like some sort of glue (instant gasket?), personally I'll stick to 'O' rings, that's too cutting edge for me.

Actually o-ring was not present in any shape or form. Some sort of stringy fibre was wound around the thread plumber style. No visible damage done. The other stuff was like an oil+water mayo consistency, don't think it was sealant of any sort. The amazing thing is it worked.. no leaks although sphere itself is shot[xx(]

thats not fair, i have half a roll of PTFE on the hose tap outside as its an imperial thread on the wall side and metric thread on the tap side, they dont exactly fit. Its super tight but still leaks. How on earth does a 55bar sphere held on with PTFE not leak :(

PTFE is white in colour. But it looks to me like a similar type of product to me.

I suspect that it did leak, hence the oily mayonaise gunge, I think it was tightened up severely to stop it from leaking too.

Looks like the plumbers old favourite Boss white and hemp to me. Vanny, that's what you should have used on your tap - stops anything leaking (including spheres by the look of it!)
