Fuel sender unit.

Post by adzbaby »

I recently replaced the fuel pump on my brother 230 CE Merc, and it got me thinking about the Xantia fuel sender unit. This is not a fuel pump is it? As it doesn't look as though it has an impellor or anything to create suction etc.
Is the fuel sender actually a electric pump or is the fuel drawn up it via the injection pump? May seem a silly question but it just the fuel sender didn't look as though it had the mechanics to 'pump' fuel?
Also are these fuel senders the same in diesels and petrol xantias?
Cheers
Adam.

The 'sender' that I think you are refering to, is the variable resistor that sends information about fuel level to the fuel gauge.

There's no fuel pump in the XUD Xantia tank - only a tube which relies on the suction at the engine end of the fuel line. Hence the fact that even with the tiniest airleak, the engine is reluctant to start. On HDI Xantias and other HDI vehicles, there is a pump in the tank.
