Keypad immobiliser

Post by rossnunn »

Does anyone know what it does??
This multipoint I fitted, I've finally got round to powering everything up but although I get fuel there is nothing else.
I have read storys of keypads being locked to the ecu & alike but wondere if anyone knew what it actually did, that way I might be able to formulate a plan to bypass it.

Hi
The keypad on the petrol engines IS locked to the ECU.
The immobiliser works on the fuel system & the igntion system.
Powering up the fuel pump & igntion coil WILLNOT bypass the immobiliser!
What have you done to the car then? Have you changed engines? or ECU? etc

not seen my last posts?? lol no worries.
I have swapped the 1.4SPI unit in my ZX for a 1.4MPI out of a 98 306, basicly. Thats interesting about not being able to bypassing.

Hi
I didnt say the keypad wasnt bypassable, You can do it if you spend around £250 - £300 on an unlocked ECU.
Did the ZX start life with a keypad? Did the 306 the engine & ECU come out of have a keypad fitted?
If yes to both questions, Did they both have the SAME type of keypad fitted? Theres 2 different kinds!
Theres the easy to beat "D/N" button type & the Thatcham Cat 2 "S" button type ( Still beatable though )

The zx doesn't have a keypad.
The 306 it came out of, I can't remember to be honsit, I never saw the keypad, the engine was already out when I picked it up & the car was stipped almost bare.

Ok
First thing all march 1997 onwards 306s use a TRANSPONDER key immobiliser & NOT a keypad.
Best bet here is an UNLOCKED ECU & spending some money with an auto electrician.
Also are you sure the wiring loom is matched up correctly???

yep, we've spent about 2 months working on the loom alone all seems fine - no puffs os smoke no smelling of burning etc.

If you are 100% sure the loom is matched up ok, Go & find your self an unlocked ECU & it should start fine.

ok, I've emailed a few people lets see what response I get.
To unlock a ecu, I've read, you start the car, disconnect the pad/transponder wire & it disables the immob permantly. But if you removed the ECU plug would it not revert back to factory defaults?

Never tried to unlock one, I do know a lot of people get caught out by disconnecting the keypad, All is fine untill the battery goes flat or gets disconnected then the ECU has a sulk & locks up looking for the keypad.
Thats ok if you have the code, I think unlocking is a bit more involved then that.

If I bought a keypad & matching ECU. Is there a default code or would I also need the original code??

the keypad its not matched to the ECU,the code is just stored in the ECU.if i had a car with the code 1111 & borrowed the keypad from a mates car that had the start code 2222 & pluged it into my car the code to start my car would still be 1111.
If you unplug the keypad/transponder unit when the engine is running the ECU should stay unlocked even if the battey or ECU are disconected as they cant comunicate with each other.

This really doesn't help your problem but I run without a keypad. Started the car (over a year ago now) by putting in the number and disconnected the keypad whilst it was running. I've had the battery disconnected a few times now and although the alarm goes off each time I reconnect it - a quick lock and unlock of the doors stops it (this may be normal behavior). I've never had any problems starting and the ECU has never played up. The only problem is I can't remember where I wrote the code down now! I should have entered it in the handbook. Oh well, time will tell!

interesting.
The problem that I have is that I have the engine fitted & the thing insn't starting, the fuel pump doesn't run so I suspect its probably the immobiliser kicking in. Because the engine is out of a 306 I don't have anything more than the engine & wiring loom, so I can't yet do the unplug the keypad part, mainly because I havn't got one. :D
