Xantia HDi front suspension arm

Post by mcgregor »

I hope someone can advise me. My 2001 Xantia HDi just had an advisory on the MOT for the nearside lower front suspension arm rear bush. Not bad enough to fail but obviously it need to be attended to. I had a look on the Haynes manual and am totally baffled. Can this bush be replaced without removal of the entire supension arm? If so can you tell me how its done. Is it as easy as it looks or are there major pitfalls?
Cheers

What are they saying is wrong with the bush ? As far as I know it is an integral part of the arm so replacing it probably means replacing the entire arm.... seems unlikely that the bush would fail..

They said it looked worn, but not enough to fail the MOT as there was still not excessive play. Perhaps a look from someone who knows citroens might be an idea. I hope you're wrong about it being an integral part of the arm and can be changed!

Citroen in Portugal does not seem to sell the bushes...only the entire arm. Mine also need rplacement!

The rear bush (also known as P-bush) can be changed - but you will need to remove the arm from the car to do it. It's a press fit on the arm, so it will need some persuasion to get it on and off - and make sure you note the position of the bush before you take it off, so you get the new one in in the same place (both front rear, and the angle to the arm). The rubber part of the bush deteriorates, and eventually splits - they can go quite a long time with cracks in though, before they give rise to excessive play. On ZX's it's common to just fit a new arm, as the arm doesn't cost much more than the bushes, but I don't think this is the case on the Xantia.

Thanks Richard that's answered my question. It looks like a trip to the local Citroen specialist (not agent!!) before next years MOT. Many thanks for the replies.
