You will need a fully charged battery to start it.
Just prime the diesel fuel system using the "grenade" style hand pump next to the timing belt cover. Pump until it goes hard, then start it up (after waiting for orange glow plug light to go out).

If I remember correctly you need to pump the priming bulb until it goes firm as solara says, then turn the ignition to position two to activate the stop solenoid in the fuel pump and then pump the bulb again until it goes hard.

Saw a prog on TV where they took a diesel engine from a combine harvester out of some bushes where it had been lying for 40 years, painted it red, changed the oil, put a charged up battery on it, pressed the starter and away it went. [^]
The old timer who had helped them find all the bits etc said "that's unusual, they are usually buggers to start".. [:o)] [:D] [:D] lmho.
