Saxo rumble from front axel

Post by sbraud »

Hi all,
This is the first post for my nearest-and-dearest’s Saxo… Sad day [:(][:(]
I’m hoping for some pointers to a problem I picked up on this morning.
When driving I can hear a rumble from front axel. It only happens for a short time while torque is taken out of drive. I.e. foot off accelerator. When accelerating, rumble disappears.
Also, when driving UP a long steep hill and accelerating, there is no noise until is foot off pedal. Going DOWN same long steep hill, this reverses. I.e. rumble under acceleration, which disappears when foot is off accelerator pedal. [?][?]
There is also a slight squeak from front axel when on tight turn. I.e. small round-about.
Car has only done 65k [:(]
I’m thinking it might be a dry/worn front bearing and hoping it’s not driveshaft!
Anyone been here on a Saxo?
Cheers
Steve

Wheel bearing would show up more on turning left or right? Sounds very much like a drive shaft joint to me which complains when chassis is driving the engine, going downhill, and when the engine is driving the slack is taken up in the motion, so no noise. They are not a hard job if you have the kit to do it.

Hi all,
Got under Saxo last night for a closer look… Shock horror!!
Gaiter metal straps on both CV joints have broken/undone at stud connection interface and spewed out lubricant over lower suspension/brake disks etc… Looks like N/S has been dry for a week or two, hence the noise when joint worms up. Also metal strap spinning and getting caught on hub which doesn’t help.
I cleaned most lubricant up before taking picture of O/S hub.

So I’ve a couple of questions?
What’s good to fix this? I guess I need some replacement straps – so what’s best?
I see GSF have a UNIVERSAL SOFT GAITER KIT - N45000 - CV BOOT KIT-OUTER and various straps. Some pointers would be greatly appreciated!
Also what lubricant needs to go back in gaiter?
I was most miffed when I realised both straps had broken at joint and then suspicious when I found glue on one of the joints. The only person to touch this area since car was bought some years previous was my soon to be ex-mechanic who replaced brake disks and pads last September!!
Arrr !!
WHY scrimp on a few pence for new straps … Unbelievable !!
Cheers

Think I would hold back on your "soon to be ex mechanic". Discs and pads are a very simple job and do not involve touching your outer CV boot in any way.
