Gearbox Oil for citroen V6 auto-adaptive gearboxes

Post by tonyg »

Hi
I'm thinking of changing the oil in my XM V6 24V which has the auto-adaptive gearbox - same as Xantia V6 24V. Does anyone know what sort of fluid is require (there is just a citroen part no. in the handbook), how much and where the drainplug is? Also is the gearbox filled again via the black screw top on top of the gearbox.
Finally according to the handbook the sport/econ/norm mode indicator on the dash should start flashing when the gearbox computer reckons that the box has done enough changes with the oil. Any idea of how many this usually is in terms of miles covered?
Cheers
Tony

I recently changed the oil in my V6 autobox. The correct type is Esso LT71141 which should be available from your Cit dealer. I think it was about £15 a bottle and I used three bottles, although you may find it cheaper elsewhere. The ECU has a heat cycle counter, mine has done 78k miles and the lights weren't flashing, I just changed it anyway and it made a big difference to the smoothness of the box. The counter can be reset but you will need to take it to a dealer or specialist for them to do it with their box of tricks. I didn't bother, I'll worry about it if it starts flashing.
The drain plug is on the bottom just across from the engine oil plug. If you have the early type with a dipstick you can refill through the hole but if you have the later type with a level plug like mine you will need to get the car up on ramps front and rear (to keep it level) as the level plug is right at the back of the gearbox housing. You will also need a new breather cone as you will have to remove the old one to refill it.

Hi Stempy
Thanks for the info. I've been for a look and I can't see a dipstick, so it's onto the level indicator. I'll have look and see if I can see the breather cone too - citroen part I take it.
By the way. Just how the hell do you get hydro-pnemo car onto two sets of ramps?
I'd be very interested to see how a Xantia V6 goes. The Xm V6 isn't exactly slow, and the extra Kg weight difference must count. Where are you in the UK, Stempy? I wouldn't mind one even - they seem to be even cheaper than XM's.
Thanks
Tony

If it's got a dipstick it will be down at the front of the box. The ones without a dipstick still have a casting hole where it should go but obviously it's blanked off. The breather cone is under the round blue plastic cap on the top. It just pulls out.
Re the ramps, I drove the front onto ramps, trolley jacked under the rear and used axle stands, but you could just as easily slide another set of ramps under the rear wheels once it is in the air.
The Xantia goes fairly well. I once had a drag race with an Audi 1.8 turbo and won, but not by much, and I've had it up to 135mph, but chickened out of going any faster, though there were still plenty of revs left. Shocking behavior I know, so don't tell anyone. I'm in deepest Surrey BTW.
