Flashing Battery Light & stop on Dash

Hi everybody,
could someone give me an indication what this problem may be,
Driving home from work there and out of the blue i noticed that the "battery light" on my dash was coming on and off intermittently, along with the "stop" light. Was pretty worried as i was a 20 mile drive, but made it home ok. Had a quick check under the bonnet when i came in just in case the battery connections had came lose, but all seemed ok.
Its the origonal Renault battery.
Car is
Renault Laguna sport 1.8lit, year 2000 model.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi
It could be one of a few things:
1. Faulty earth
2. Faulty Diode pack in the alternator
3. Knackered alternator
4. Alternator belt could be slipping
These are the most common things that I can think of. Personally, I'd check the alternator belt.

cheers mate,
for whatever reason, this problem has stopped.
Had it in the garage
Belt, battery,alternator, all checked out ok.
Im slightly confused, but it has not returned for the past 4 days since i had it checked,
Gave the alternator, a good spray with WD40 (maybe a bit of moisture) in there.
Will just play the waiting game now
