xantia Air Conditioning

Post by skyecat »

Hi all, i have just bought my first Citroen - a Xantia 2.0 16v SXi estate. I am delighted with the car - specially considering the price! it is a 1996 N reg with air conditioning.
the switch on the dashboard doesn`t light up when pressed and no difference in the temperature of the air coming out of the vents.
the fuse for the aircon is ok, but the car does seem to have a bit of a habit of blowing fuses as when I looked at the car, the wipers never worked, but a change of fuse sorted this and then yesterday, the front windows were down and the fuse went, but a new fuse sorted this out too!
Any ideas?

I am afraid that since you don´t know the history of the car, you will have to check the electricals "by the book".
Do you feel the compressor cutting in when you press the button? on uphills you feel a certain power loss. If you look under the hood you should also at least hear the compressor enganging.
Many problems are often due to ground return paths that become resistive after the years and some corrosion due to humidity, salt, etc. Always have both power (+12V) and Ground connections in mind when troubleshooting the electricals.

thanks for that.
I`m not much of an auto electrician though really, but I`m pretty sure that the cmopressor doesn`t kick in.
I`m thinking of getting a local auto electrician to have a look at it - as we would like (as with all our cars) to keep in tip top condition mechanically as we do about 20,000 miles a year going to concerts, holidays and visiting friends.
I must admit that I think it might be a dodgy earth somewhere, but the one thing that puts me off electrical glitches is the spasmodic occurance of them and the time looking for them, not to mention the removal of easily broken trims and kinds of unnatural positions you have to contort yourself into! - now spark plugs and air filters and oil changes i can manage!
i`m looking for a parcel shelf as the makeshift one i made doesn`t really look the part - anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

Your lack of aircon is almost guaranteed to be low gas. Get it checked by an aircon specialist for leaks and then recharged. If it's been inoperative for a while then have them fit a new receiver/drier and do a recharge. under £100 all in or go somewhere else.

hi fastandfurryous, thanks for that info, i`ll be ringing the local aircon guy tomorrow and see what he charges me - but the guideline price of £100 could well be useful.
I rang the local auto electrician today and he suggested that i don`t waste my money on getting him to check out the electrics as it could be a long and costly job only to find nothing, but if any other fuses blow, he would have a look.
at least it saved me money!
