Hmm, judging by the bumper-to-bumper stream of Passat TDIs and BMW 316s I see hogging the outside lane at 70mph every day, you'd think we had them already.

Did they not see Clarkson's test a couple of years ago? Unless there is also a radar distance sensor on the front of all fitted cars the number of rear-end shunts will increase dramatically as drivers literally go to sleep on congested roads

I can see some problems with this. Just driving around normally the GPS will loose lock sometimes due to loss of signal from driving under trees and obscuring from buildings etc.
I also think that it would be very easy to jam[:D]

Yep, you'll have half the population deliberately circumventing the system and the other half driving with their foot nailed to the floor and brains in neutral.
Just think how often some numpty pulls out of a sidestreet on you. Think how many more will be doing that if they know nothing coming along will be doing more than 30mph.
