FIXED - 2.0/16v Xantia Ignition ping

Post by sbraud »

OK… Job No 20 of 550 and growing !!! [;)]
Ignition ping.
My Xantia 2.0/16v XU10J4 has a slight ignition timing ping in 5th up hills or hard acceleration in 3rd/4th/5th gears. It’s only slight but if it’s fixable I’d like to track it down.
Anyone know the most likely/common cause in 2.0/16v. Should I be thinking of throttle potientiometer and/or knock sensor? Or should my question be `how long is a piece of string!’
Cheers
Steve

You could try using super unleaded and see if it stops the ping.

it doesnt have a knock sensor but it does have a cam sensor which is about the same thing to check it, expose the connections "do not remove the multi plug" then using a volt/multimeter test terminals 2 and 3 voltage should read 4 volts fluctuating, if that's ok then try a better petrol station or use Optimax ( which I think is well over priced ) or use a fuel booster additive.
edited because I forgot one of the <b>"</b> out.

Is the super unleaded suitable for the 2.0 16v? It states on the car octane 90-95 methinks?

standard unleaded fuel from the pumps is ok and is about 95 octane, but it could be you have a bad batch of fuel which is not uncommon or you needed to drop a gear on that hill ( pinking is the term used ) which can burn valves out

Thanks guys, I’ll fill up with RON97/98 when I get paid (2-4p per ltr more than 95) [xx(][:(!][:0]
Cheers Richard, Any pointers for cam sensor? Where it is/what it looks like? Also `fuel booster additive’ … any recommendations?
Thanks again…

STP is the most used try some then go to the sensor, sensor is on the right hand side rear of the cylinder head.

Update:
I’ve noticed engine only seems to ping when engine is warm, 80/90oC or above. I’ve tried to re-create conditions with cold engine and so far… No ping.
Also stumped up the extra 3p a litre for a tank of 97ron. Initial test made no difference but I’ll see how things go after a week before trying octane fuel additive.
