Xantia 2.1 TD diagnostics

Has anyone had success in accessing the vehicle diagnostics codes, If so how was it done, how much did it cost, and where can I obtain the equipment.
THe ECU is made by Lucas and has the following label
96 305 092 80
XUD L CO1 23.06.97
