Peugeot 405... plz help!

I am new here and this board seems to be the place to ask about my problem...
I bought a peugeot 405 M-reg saloon recently... it seemed to run fine for a week or so until it wouldn't startup after being idle for three days. The battery seemed to be the problem and after taking it to a couple of places to be charged and being told that it was completely knackered, I got a new one.
When i hooked up the new battery... nothing happened... at all... no ignition, no sound, no dashboard lights, nothing at all... and i definitely hooked it up the right way...
Would really appreciate any advise on this... thanks

Have you checked you havent blown any of the main fuses in the fuse box under the bonnet near the battery, That black box on the passenger side inner wing just in front of the battery.
Thats the main power supply feed for the car.
