The TDs are pretty long lasting, you'll get sick of it long before its worn out, 250k really isnt a big mileage.
What usually happens with cars is that they get old and worth little so the owner stops paying to maintain them and the lack of maintenance kills them e.g. letting the oil and water run low.

A hell of a long time - I once new of a 1986 Ford Sierra 2.3 Diesel (its a old peugeot unit) that did just short of 400k (it was a ex-taxi bought for £1450 in 1991 with 140k) rust finally killed it in 2002, so a 1.9 TD should see this milage if it is well looked after - like said the ZX would prob fall apart first.

I think the answer is 'How long do you want it to last?' If you want it to last another 10 years then you'll look after it, service it regularily and do the repairs as and when necessary and keep the thing up together so that its safe and pleasant to drive.
If your question is 'How long will it go on for if I don't do anything?' the answer is obviously different.

Believe it or not Malcolm - the old Ford Sierra Mk 1 and Ford Granada Mk 2 and 3 used Peugeot/Citroen Diesels - I think the engine came from the old 604 (I cant be sure though), it came in 2300cc (OHV) and 2500cc (OHV) both NA units. I cant be 100% sure as I aint had much to do with the 2.5 unit, but if my memory serves me correct Ford developed it further and fitted a turbo to it in the early 90's (for the Granada only). The Transit used a diffrent engine. Sorry to bore you with non Citroen stuff (im a Ford anorak) [:p]

The Ford Granada and the Rover 825 had a 2.5 litre 4 cylinder turbo diesel by VM diesel, its the same engine that the Jeep Cherokee and Chrysler Voyager had. Its a strange engine by modern standards, with push rods and separate heads but it uses the same fuel pumps as the XUDs. They're not particularly refined.
Kowalski - I'm interested to learn that the VM engine which presumably must have been installed transversly. I know it was used in the Rover SD1 (and in a different form in the Range Rover) and in its SD1 form I seem to recall that at around 2.5 litres it rpoduced less power and torque than a 1.7TD XUD!

Thats about the best site I've found for that engine.

You're right - never taken much interest in the 800 series Rover having burnt a pre-release3 one off relatively easily with a Scirocco on a trip round the Midlands - and yes - he was trying - from where he overtook - his nerve was much better than mine!
I always thought the 800 looked like a bloated montego - and the one i rode in was rather plain - and I remember its owner being very relieved when the Police phoned him after it had been stolen and telling him that as it had been in the river for more than 4 hours it would be written off!
Actually BMC produced some good diesels in 50's and 60's but lost direction. Landrover 2.25 was probably the most powerful in its day but B series 1489 (48 BHP) must have been close. The problems were however the one that hampered diesel development for years - heavy engines that were'nt as powerful as their petrol equivalents - so large slow car or small car with too heaby an engine.

The Ford Granada used both the 2.5 Peugeot engine (its actually a Peugeot unit, not Pug/Cit, its from thedays before Pug and Cit had merged!) in both turbo and N/A form. It was the same engine as the 505. The earlier 604 used the 2.3 turbo engine, the 2.5 turbo was 505 only. In about 1991 when 505 production stopped, Ford switched to the VM unit. The 2.3 was used (N/A only) in the early Sierras until Ford replaced it with their own 1.8TD unit.
