Xantia Rusty Strut Tops
During my cambelt and waterpump change today I took the opportuniny to have a good look at my strut tops. They're rusty and although they're fair at the moment I will be looking to change them before the autumn.
Is it a case of replacing the whole strut? Shame as they are both in good nick otherwise, or are replacement mounting plates available?
What sort of a job is it to have the struts out?

I'm not quite sure what your problem is - if its the bodyshell itself that is rotting this is a welding job and I'm sure a specialist welder will do the job for a reasonable price - they used to do these things all the time on cortinas (Mk 1 and 2 but not 3 - and I'm sure there are others since that have needed this sort of repair. The result won't be beautiful but will be effective.
I can weld and have the kit but for this would see how much a professional would charge and probably let him do the job.

Sorry Jeremy, I should have been a bit more descriptive. The bodyshell is 100% fine. The rust is on the plates at the top of the strut that sits under the bodyshell suspension turrets, the one with the four tapped holes in that receive the four bolts that secure it to the bodyshell. I've had a good poke around and it seems sound but flakes of rust came off.

Unless the metal has thinned significantly in a stressed area I wouldn't think there is much to worry about.

So you havent seen the XM/Xantia pictures with the strut out of the bonnet and a very badly bent bonnet?
The answere to your questions guys is yes its a part you can replace but it also has the black strut top as part of the item, its £76 ish from citroen and its model specific.
with the amount of force that goes through these when you turn the stearing wheel i would suggest that people keep an eye on it ot you will be replacing this and a bonnet at some point in the future if its goes and you missed it.

Hi Ritchie,
Funny, I thought I'd posted a reply on this. Maybe not in this thread though as there is a few threads on sililar topics.
Yes, basically, I nipped in to see my Local Citroen dealer and using Andy's most valuable information (Thanks Andy, really appreciated) I got my new tops for £88 each in two days. Genuine parts too.
The RP number is stencilled on the nearside bulkhead near the strut top along with the paint code. It's the 4 digit number.
Just need the time to do them now! I took your advice Malcolm, and got some new Drop Links too. I also got some new hydraulic seals just in case. All easily available from GSF.
I must say the pictures you posted Malcolm, in the other thread on this topic means I'll be doing them sooner rather than later. I printed one of the pictures in A4 size and have stuck it on my office wall to remind me! It's been quite a talking point at work...
