Xsara gearbox/diff failure

Have just been recovered from France with partners Xsara HDi SX after the gearbox failed. It seems like a bearings gone in the diff.
Is this common?

Have you noticed all the Xsara's pulled over - all over the roads in Europe ? [8D]

I have seen a few diffs fail in Xant/BX TD taxis at generally high miles, otherwise with occasional oil level checks they last a long time.

Or is it the clutch actuator thats gone - it's done 61000 miles

on a 1.9d zx had the diff go at 214k; think it is the same box as a xsara? it was 1 of the pinions that broke in 2. the bits smashed through the box housing leaving gearbox oil all over. when ringing around i was told it is a common problem.
