Molyslip in LHM?

Unread post by dnsey »

I'm about to change my Xantia's LHM, and it occured to me that a bit of Molyslip or similar might benefit the pump and avoid some of the sticktion which seems to be at the root of many HP problems.
Has anyone tried this, or have any opinions?

I don't think I would risk it, there's a lot of hydraulics to clean out if it doesn't work!

I'd be careful.
There are a lot of seals in the hydraulic system (height correctors, cylinders, brake calipers, doseur valves etc) that might not like the additives in Molyslip. LHM does the job well, the wheel cylinders in the Xantia don't wear out and the pumps last a long time so why risk it?

No, don't do it. Use Hydraflush to clean the system then new LHM, nothing else.

According to a couple of friends who are in the engineering field, Moly is no longer regarded as the super goo it once was as they have discovered that as time goes on, sections of it seperate and cause the not so metal friendly portions to degrade and cause damage to the metal it's supposed to be lubricating, so as far as "will it cause problems?" goes, I'd say based on the lectures I've had on it, I'd say that it definitely will stuff the system for you.

I reckon you should do it and tell us how it goes. Xantias are worthless anyway so if you break it you can buy a new one.
Molybdenum based lubricants provide almost zero firction when used in spae where they wont get contaminated but here on earth the atmosphere ruins them. They work a bit like graphite in that they have a weak bond with one of the atoms in the molecules which can move along the molecule and produce slipping without too much energy required.

A Cavalier is too good for him, lets make him drive a one litre Nova with a boy racer body kit and exhaust!

Why! How can upgrading to a Nova be a punishment?

I think a suitable tune up for a oleo system might be (as discussed elsewhere here) to run LHM dosed with some Hydraflush, my own STOP lamp flashing problem arrived after hydraflushing when i popped the new thick LHM in.
