My 1.9 turboD is making strange noises from the timing belt end.
I changed the Aux belt tensioner and aux belt. The other aux belt pulley seems ok. The noise is still there.
I had my air con compressor pulley fixed. That made a much worse noise, but thats now gone away.
I asked my local specialist what he thinks. He didn't really know. But he suggested that it could be from the timing belt crankshaft pulley. He mentioned some pulley which is like a composite which includes some rubber bits. Does anyone know what this could be ?
The noise is worst at tickover. It is a light tinny sound. It drops off as the revs pick up which suggests a belt pulley.
Could it be the timing belt tensioner ?
Has anyone else had similar noise problems ?
I want to fix it before something breaks !
thanks

The TD doesn't have the same problem with the crank pulley as the HDi does (that's the one that falls apart). Whip the belt off and run the engine without out for a short while to see if the noise goes away - if it does then it's on the aux belt, if it doesn't then it's on the cam belt. Don't forget if you've got aircon there's a manual tensioner, auto tensioner, and idler to go at! On the cambelt there's the tensioner, idler and water pump to go at.

The 2.1 td engine has a composite pulley, I dont know about the 1.9. The one on my XM fell apart, instantly observable as all the dash lights came on, but I think you would have noticed that. The only possibilties other than mentioned in previous replies that I can think of, are the alternator bearing or that something has come loose, have you checked all the pulleys for tightness?

I replaced one only last week,(crankshaft pulley) the pulley was broken where it fits into the cambelt sprocket and was floating around wearing the rear of the bolt head/washer, you couldnt see anything until it was removed and it made a shrieking noise just like the aux belt tensioners make.

Can even be a dirty or unsuitable belt. I spent hours chasing strange noises on my TD BX last year only to find they all dissappeared for a while if I sprayed the belt with silicon spray!
BX belt is short and only connects crank pulley to alternator so there was no chance if anything else getting lubricated and the alternator was new.
I also has this problem on a Renault 21 and used to coat the belt with vaseline to quieten it!
