BX 16 engine frost damage.

Unread post by AndersDK »

What is likely to be damaged when an engine has been exposed to freezing cooling water ?
The engine in question is a '92 BX16TZI (type BDY or BDZ).
I stock a BX16TRS engine (type 171C).
As far as I see it the block would be a direct swap as both types have the same bore & stroke. Of course only if the TZI cylinder head has survived the frost damage.

With frost I have only ever seen block damage, usually an external crack or a blown core plug. Never seen a head suffer.

I repaired at an old 504 which got frozen, the top of the head between the valvegear was pushed up into peaks which had cracks all over the place, these were successfully knocked back into place and alu welded, who knows you may be lucky, I suppose close visual examination will tell you.

I repaired my boats 2.1 diesel engine after water froze in the engine and it sustained a long crack along the block on the outside wall, so all i did was clean it up and slap some chemical metal on the outside of the block and it worked perfectly with no leaks for over 4 years and was still going strong when i sold it

Tx guys -
I've decided it's too big a project since the car must be transported quite a distance (too expensive).
It was however a very fair deal for any DIY'er.
